The search for a man missing off of Kaalualu Bay has been suspended, the Coast Guard announced in a press release Friday.
Shane Romena was out fishing with his 10-year-old son Monday evening when he fell into the ocean as he tried to clean a cooler, Romena’s son told responders. The boy lost sight of his father shortly thereafter.
Romena, 48, is still missing.
“Our sincerest condolences go out to Romena’s family and friends during this difficult time,” Senior Chief Brian Wear, of the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu, said in the release. “”Suspending a case is never an easy thing to do and it’s something that is handled with the utmost care and consideration. We want to thank our partners at the Hawaii Fire Department for all their assistance during this search.”
The search spanned an area of more than 1,600 miles over a period of four days.
At the time of the incident, weather reports indicated winds of 40 mph and seas of up to eight feet with a three-foot swell.
